Capes News – September 2017

It’s Time to Clean UP!

Yes, you heard it here – the Fall Clean-Up starts today, September 1, 2017 and runs through Sunday, September 10, 2017. This is your opportunity to do a little yard work without having to worry about what to do with the debris above and beyond the 2 bags per week that the landscapers will take. Josh Vance with His Glory Landscape and Home Maintenance will be organizing the 4 collection sites and the HOA will take care of the disposal fees. There are just a few simple rules:

  1. If you are taking out trees and/or tree limbs, please limit them to those that are 4 inches in diameter or less.
  2. This event is for clean up, not CLEARING. If you have a significant number of trees that you want to remove, you will need to dispose of them at your own expense. Our budget can not handle the disposal of an entire forest – sorry!
  3. Debris must be taken to one of the 4 collection sites below, and placed between the orange stakes. (Here’s a map of the sites: https://www.thecapeshoa.org/documents/forms-and-information/Clean%20Up%20Location%20Map.pdf)
    • The front of Lot #152 on Fall Creek Drive. (Just a couple of lots south of the fire lane/gravel path to the cottages
    • The Meadow (where Capes Drive, Capes Loop and Capes Point all come together)
    • Tract F on Capes Drive (the northernmost point of Capes Drive, right at the point where the road makes a 180° turn)
    • Tract N on Promontory Lane (near the observation platform)

If for some reason you need Josh to collect debris directly from your lot, it is your responsibility to contact him and let him know (hisglorylandscapecare@gmail.com). If the debris meets the criteria for items #1 and 2 above (it’s less than 4 inches in diameter and is not a significant number of trees) he will still include it with the HOA disposal items, however, you will be billed for any time/labor charges incurred while collecting the debris from your property. Our contract/arrangement with Josh is for setting up and clearing the 4 collection areas only. Anything above and beyond that requested by a homeowner will need to be done at that homeowner’s expense.

Join Us for Wine and Cheese!

If you’re at The Capes on Saturday, September 2nd, be sure and stop by the Bridge House from 4-6pm for our annual Wine and Cheese Social. Bring a bottle of your favorite vino to share, and we’ll provide the cheese. It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors, especially if you’re new to the community or don’t get to visit very often. Hope to see you there!

Road Sealing

Northwest Asphalt will be here on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 (weather permitting) to reseal Capes Drive from the front entrance to the 4-way stop sign (including the dumpster area). Because this is our only way in or out of the community, they will work on only one side of the road at a time, and the gate will be left open. Please be mindful of flaggers and/or oncoming traffic while driving through this area. They will also be filling some cracks along Capes Drive between the stop sign and the first townhome, as well as sealing the driveway at the Manager’s office.

Because of the overwhelming response from owners wanting/needing to have their driveways resealed – we’ve had about 40 sign up so far! – that will be done the following week, on Wednesday and Thursday, September 13 and 14. If you haven’t called or emailed the office yet to sign up, there’s still time! The cost typically comes out to between $50 and $100 for townhome driveways, depending on the length, and you will be billed by Northwest Asphalt directly. Single family home driveways can run a little higher, and the longest driveways on Fall Creek Drive can go as high as $300.

Now that the Eclipse is Over…

…are you feeling a little lost? At odds with yourself and your place in the universe? Well, I can’t help you there, but I can offer an answer to the question, “What the heck do I do with these eclipse glasses now?” Drop them off at the office, and we will donate them to Astronomers Without Borders (yes, that’s really a thing) so that they can be redistributed to children around the world, allowing them to safely view future solar eclipses. (There’s another one next year in South America on July 2, 2019)

If you missed the Capse-clipse party up at the top of Promontory Lane, you can view the photos here: https://www.thecapeshoa.org/gallery/wppaspec/oc1/lnen/cv0/ab14/pt155. We were a little concerned at first that it would be too cloudy to see, but it cleared out just in time!

NO DRIVING ON THE FIRE LANE…

Awhile back, the large boulders blocking either end of the gravel fire lane that connects Fall Creek Drive to the Cottages were moved so that in the event of an emergency, fire and rescue vehicles would be able to access the path more easily. Since then, it has been reported that other vehicles have been spotted using this path as a short cut. Unless you are on your way to a fire (or are on fire yourself), PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE ON THIS PATH. It is a walking path that many residents use to walk through the neighborhood and is not meant for vehicular traffic. We are working on implementing some traffic-blocking measures that will still allow vehicles to get through in an emergency, but in the meantime, if you see anyone driving on this path, please let them know (nicely) that this is not a road for casual, everyday use.

And Speaking of Fire…

It’s not every day that we can say this, but it’s been pretty dry here lately at The Capes. If you have a wood burning fire place, please be mindful on extremely windy days – sometimes your fireplace can send still-burning embers up the chimney. With many wildfires already burning throughout Oregon, Washington and California, we don’t want to become yet another statistic!
